The Wervelwind Dutch patriotic magazine proudly proclaimed that it was ‘delivered by the RAF’, but a format slightly smaller than a postcard made it highly suitable for concealment and passing on. The contents of this second edition, May 1942, included a piece on a speech by the Dutch Queen; resistance in the Dutch Indies and Balkans; and German financial plundering. A lengthy section was devoted to the RAF air offensives, and the Halifax bomber. Crucial was an article on how to make your own radio, and the frequencies used by the BBC and other free world stations. In May 1943 the Nazi propaganda leader, Joseph Goebbels, would confide to his diary that he believed that ‘British propaganda’ was behind industrial unrest: he therefore advocated ‘taking radio sets away from the Dutch as quickly as possible’.
